The main characters are out of high school (and others are in their early 20s), but the book will appeal to mature middle schoolers and up who are familiar with the previous books. There's everything you'd expect from a Stiefvater novel: fast cars and car chases, slow-burn romance, fierce and fabulous girls, angsty and vulnerable boys, and the continuation of one of YA's most beloved love stories. As with her other books in this universe, the characters must learn to trust one another and work together in order to survive threats. Parents need to know that Call Down the Hawk is the first book in Maggie Stiefvater's spin-off series to The Raven Cycle quartet, focusing on Ronan Lynch and taking place just a few months after the events of The Raven King.

*The author is vulnerable which spoke to me from a 1 to 1 view rather than from a preachy place. *He explains why, if you’ve done a certain therapy before, it may not have “worked”. There is not a one size fits all solution. *He offers a swiss-army knife approach to working through the trauma. *Depending on which group you fall into, he gives key strategies to how you approach things and ways to recover in your style. *He breaks down the survivor types and their characteristics into four groups, all which seemed spot on. *Though acknowledging the trauma of physical and sexual abuse he primarily focuses on the the severe scarring of emotional abuse, abandonment, and neglect. *The author speaks from experience as both a survivor and a therapist. There are many elements that make this self-recovery book stand above others for me. The author is grounded in that he himself has struggled with trauma recovery and it’s palpable that he wishes to impart the strategies and wisdom he has found to work for himself and others. Complex PTSD is one of the best books I’ve read on childhood trauma recovery.ĭespite the long title, the book itself is not complex nor is it written in psycho-babble ra-ra. Emily Lloyd-Jones is extremely talented and a brilliant writer. It can be hard to stand out in fantasy, but despite incorporating a familiar fantasy trope - the heist - Lloyd-Jones’ story was original, witty and well-written. So many little details that truly transported me to the city. The detailed imagery made the world feel so REAL. The dialogue was excellent - the perfect balance between sounding natural but still effectively revealing information about the plot. The magic system as a whole makes perfect sense and is versatile enough to be different depending on each time it is used and whoever is using it. Every obstacle she encountered forced her to use her magic in a new and exciting way. Beautiful lyrical fairytale prose with an opening that gripped me tightly and did not let me go until the very end. I wasn’t sure how their story would play out, the push and pull tension was there even from the outside and Rina Kent DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! I loved the sweet build up and oh how my heart crashed when the first wave hit. I was so curious about Xander and Kimberly’s dynamics whilst reading Aiden and Elsa’s story.
